What Is Rise & Shine? Yoga, Meditation, Breathwork & Sauna Classes in the Annapolis Valley
Rise & Shine is Saltair's collection of guided morning wellness classes, bringing together practices like yoga, meditation, breathwork and traditional sauna rituals with the restorative rhythm of hot, cold and rest.
Each class starts at 9:30 a.m. and is 75 minutes long. The first 60 minutes are guided, and the final 15 minutes are yours to use in whatever way you need that day. Classes typically run every Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Every Rise & Shine class is a little different. Your guide will lead one of four class themes:
YO|SA — Yoga + Sauna, combining mindful movement with heat, cold and stillness
Meditation — a guided practice for slowing down, becoming present and finding stillness
Breathwork — using intentional breathing techniques alongside heat, cold and rest
Aufguss — a traditional guided sauna experience using aromatic steam, aroma and rhythmic towel techniques to intensify and circulate the heat
Some mornings involve more movement. Others are intentionally quiet. Some focus on your breath. Others put the sauna itself at the centre of the experience.
The common thread is simple: you don't have to figure out what to do next.
Your guide leads the way, so you can focus on being fully present in the experience, and start your day feeling truly alive.
What to Expect at a Rise & Shine Class
Depending on the class, you may begin with movement, meditation or breathwork in one of Saltair's indoor wellness spaces before moving into the sauna. From there, your guide may incorporate heat, aroma, cold immersion, quiet rest or another guided practice.
The exact experience changes from class to class, but each class follows the same philosophy: move intentionally through different forms of stimulation and restoration, with someone guiding the experience from beginning to end.
And you don't need previous experience with yoga, meditation, breathwork, sauna or cold immersion to participate. Classes are designed to be welcoming to beginners while still offering something meaningful for guests with an established practice.
Who is Rise & Shine for?
There can be a funny shift that happens somewhere in the middle of adulthood.
Wellness starts to feel less like something you need to achieve and more like something you want to protect.
You may still want to feel strong and capable, but perhaps you're also paying more attention to rest. To stress. To how your body feels. To whether the things you do in the name of wellness actually make your life feel better.
For many women in their 40s and 50s, that can mean looking for movement and wellness experiences that feel supportive rather than punishing.
Rise & Shine can be a beautiful fit if you're looking for:
A reason to make time for yourself regularly
Guided movement without the pressure of a high-intensity workout
A welcoming way to explore meditation or breathwork
More intention within your sauna practice
A morning activity that combines movement and restoration
A wellness class that doesn't require previous experience
A little structure and guidance without having to make every decision yourself
Community without competition
Something genuinely enjoyable enough to become part of your routine
You don't need to arrive feeling flexible, calm or particularly zen.
You just need to arrive.
The four types of Rise & Shine Guided Classes
One of the things people say they love most about Rise & Shine is that there is class variety.
The schedule rotates through four different class styles, giving you the opportunity to choose what sounds good to you— or try them all and discover something new.
YO|SA: Yoga + Sauna
If you're searching for yoga in the Annapolis Valley but want something a little different from a traditional studio class, start here.
YO|SA weaves mindful movement, heat, cold and stillness into one intentional practice.
The experience begins with breath-led yoga movements designed to bring awareness to the body, release tension and prepare you for the transitions ahead.
From there, the practice moves into the sauna, followed by cold immersion and a return to warmth for rest and reflection.
This isn't “hot yoga.”
The movement and sauna are distinct parts of a larger experience, allowing your practice to move through movement, heat, cold and recovery rather than staying in one environment from beginning to end.
And you don't need to be able to touch your toes.
The goal isn't the pose.
It's awareness.
Some days that might mean holding the position. Another day it might mean dropping your knees, slowing down or choosing a gentler variation.
YO|SA invites you to pay attention to where you are—and work from there.
Meditation
You don't have to be good at clearing your mind to meditate.
In fact, that's one of the reasons a guided class can be so helpful.
Rise & Shine Meditation creates a supported environment for slowing down and practising stillness without needing to know exactly how to do it on your own.
A class may explore practices such as:
Body scan meditation
Loving-kindness or Metta meditation
Visualization
Mindful awareness
Gentle exploration of thoughts or emotions
The experience incorporates the warmth of the sauna, along with elements such as aroma, guided cold immersion and quiet reflection.
That changing sensory environment can give you something tangible to notice: your breath, the warmth, the coolness of the water, the feeling of becoming still.
For experienced meditators, it's a chance to practise in an entirely different setting.
For beginners, it's simply a place to start.
Breathwork
Your breath is with you all day.
How often do you actually notice it?
Rise & Shine Breathwork uses intentional breathing alongside sauna, cold and stillness to create a practice centred around presence.
The experience begins by slowing things down and bringing awareness to your breathing before moving into the sauna for further guided breathwork and meditation.
From there, you'll experience cold immersion followed by a return to warmth, rest and reflection.
Rather than being about taking the “biggest” breath or tolerating the cold the longest, the class encourages you to notice how you respond to changing sensations and environments.
It's an opportunity to practise staying present—even when something feels unfamiliar.
For anyone curious about breathwork classes in Nova Scotia, this is a particularly approachable way to experience the practice with guidance from beginning to end.
Aufguss: A guided sauna ritual
Of the four Rise & Shine styles, Aufguss puts the sauna itself most firmly at the centre of the experience.
Aufguss is a guided sauna tradition rooted in European sauna culture.
Rather than simply sitting in the sauna, guests experience intentional rounds of heat, aromatic steam and towel movement led by a trained guide.
Water and aroma are introduced to the sauna stones, increasing humidity and creating waves of heat that are circulated through the room using rhythmic towel techniques.
It's sensory.
It's communal.
And it can completely change the way you think about what a sauna experience can be.
If your usual sauna routine is simply to get warm, sit for a few minutes and head for the cold plunge, an Aufguss class offers a chance to experience sauna as a guided ritual rather than simply a temperature.
For people searching for a guided sauna experience in the Annapolis Valley, this may be the Rise & Shine class that surprises you most.
Do I need experience?
No.
Rise & Shine classes are designed to be approachable whether you've practised yoga for years or have never taken a wellness class before.
You don't need previous experience with Yoga, Meditation, Breathwork, Sauna, Cold immersion, or Aufguss.
Your guide will explain the experience and lead you through it.
You're also encouraged to listen to your own body throughout the class.
Rise & Shine isn't about keeping up with the person next to you.
It's about learning to notice what feels right for you, and leaning into that.
Is Rise & Shine the same as a Nordic Free Flow?
Not quite.
A Nordic Free Flow is primarily self-guided. You choose your own rhythm as you move between hot, cold and rest.
Rise & Shine is a guided class.
You arrive for a scheduled experience, and your guide leads the practice.
For some guests, that's exactly what makes classes appealing.
There are fewer decisions to make.
You're not wondering whether it's time to move, what breathing exercise you should try or what you're supposed to be doing during meditation.
Someone else holds the structure for a while.
You get to participate.
Depending on the booking option available, you can also combine Rise & Shine with additional Nordic time— starting your visit together in a guided class and then moving into your own Free Flow afterward.
Why make it a regular practice?
A single class can feel wonderful.
But there's something different about having a wellness practice you return to.
Not because you should.
Because you know there's a place in your week where you'll stop doing everything else for a while.
Regular Rise & Shine classes can give you:
Structure. The time is already on the calendar.
Variety. Meditation one week. YO|SA the next. Breathwork another morning.
Guidance. You don't need to create your own practice.
Community. You begin to recognize the people sharing these mornings with you.
Time outside your normal routine. Phones away. Work or family demands on pause. An hour that asks something different of you.
What if I don't know which class to choose?
Start with the one that makes you curious.
Choose YO|SA if you like movement or yoga and want to explore what happens when you add sauna, cold and rest.
Choose Meditation if you're craving quiet, reflection and a slower pace.
Choose Breathwork if you're curious about intentional breathing and want a guided practice that combines breath with changing temperatures.
Choose Aufguss if you love sauna—or think you might—and want to experience it in an entirely new way.
Then try another.
You may be surprised by which one becomes your favourite.
Find your Rise & Shine
You don't need to wait until life becomes less busy to make room for yourself.
Morning comes either way.
Rise & Shine simply gives you a different way to begin it.
Move.
Breathe.
Get warm.
Get cold.
Get quiet.
And leave feeling a little more connected to yourself than when you arrived.
